What athletes should know about compression, recovery technology and Tampa Bay race season
Recovery tools are everywhere—but more technology doesn’t always mean better results. New research continues to support a simpler approach: use recovery tools as helpful additions while keeping quality movement, sleep, nutrition and hands-on care at the center of your routine.
Compression can help—but it isn’t magic
Compression boots, sleeves and garments have become increasingly popular with runners, HYROX competitors and team-sport athletes.
A recent review found that compression may help with soreness, swelling and how an athlete feels after training. However, it did not consistently improve performance or speed up every aspect of recovery.
At Justify Wellness, Normatec compression is used as a complement to sports massage and mobility work—not as a replacement for individualized care.
Expensive technology doesn’t guarantee better recovery
Another recent study compared sports massage by itself with massage combined with a specialized deep-heating treatment. Although the technology changed certain physiological measurements, it did not produce meaningful improvements in strength or short-term performance.
The takeaway: a recovery device can influence what is happening inside the body without necessarily helping you move or perform better.
That is why every Justify Wellness session is based on what you are feeling, how you are moving and what your upcoming training schedule requires.
Tampa Bay running season is here
November brings one of Tampa Bay’s busiest stretches of running events, including:
St. Pete Run Fest: November 13–15
Bigfoot Challenge in Seminole: November 15
Multiple Tampa Bay Turkey Trots: November 26
Whether you are preparing for a 5K, 10K or half-marathon, recovery should begin before race day. Recurring calf tightness, restricted hips, sore feet or hamstring tension can become more disruptive as training volume increases.
A targeted sports-massage session can focus on the areas taking the most stress while helping you feel prepared for your next run.

Recipe of the month: Chocolate-Cherry Recovery Smoothie
A quick option for after training or when you need an easy breakfast.
Ingredients
1 cup frozen dark cherries
1 frozen banana
¾ cup plain Greek yogurt
¾ cup milk or unsweetened almond milk
1 tablespoon unsweetened cocoa powder
1 scoop chocolate or vanilla protein powder, optional
Small pinch of salt
Ice or additional milk as needed
Directions
Add everything to a blender and blend until smooth. Add more milk for a thinner smoothie or ice for a thicker texture.
The yogurt and optional protein powder provide protein, while the fruit supplies carbohydrates to help replenish energy after demanding training.
